Where do dandruff and flakes in the hair come from?

Dandruff on the hair

Dandruff is primarily caused by a common condition called seborrheic dermatitis . This is an inflammatory skin condition that affects the scalp. The exact causes of seborrheic dermatitis are not fully understood, but several factors may contribute to its development, such as:

Sebum overproduction : The sebaceous glands of the scalp produce sebum, a natural substance that moisturizes and protects the hair and scalp. However, an overproduction of sebum can lead to an excessive buildup of dead skin cells, causing dandruff.

Yeast overgrowth: A yeast called Malassezia is normally present on the scalp. However, in some people, this yeast can grow excessively, causing inflammation and increased flaking of the skin, leading to dandruff.

Sensitivity or allergic reaction: Some people may have increased sensitivity to hair care products, dyes, or irritants in the environment. This can cause an allergic reaction or scalp irritation, leading to dandruff.

Environmental factors: Environmental conditions such as humidity, cold, stress, poor hair hygiene or hormonal changes can also promote the appearance of dandruff.

It's important to note that dandruff isn't caused by poor personal hygiene and can affect people of all ages and hair types. Fortunately, treatments are available, such as the ICONIC set from the BIOPHYTUM range, which contains active ingredients like Fluid Sulfur : a hair fortifier and micronutrient that plays a role in the formula of two natural amino acids, cysteine and methionine, found in many proteins including keratin; and coltsfoot flower extract, which, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, is commonly used to relieve itching and irritation. It rebalances the scalp. Discover the 13 active ingredients of the ICONIC range here: https://www.biophytum.net/collections/iconique/products/la-lotion-triomphante-1883-iconique-01-biophytum-2
